Three new dog breeds are being recognized by The American Kennel Club (AKC). The Icelandic Sheepdog, the Cane Corso and the Leonberger breeds are being added to the current 164 registered dog breeds. The three new breeds will now be able to compete in dog shows and other AKC activities.
American Kennel Club spokesperson Christina Duffney announced the news on June 29, 2010 on The Today Show. The Icelandic Sheepdog who is already popular in Iceland, is now creating a buzz across North America. All three breeds have been around for centuries but were never officially recognized until now.
